Trenčín Castle is a vast renovated castle, rising on a steep cliff directly above the town of Trenčín. It is a national cultural monument. The first demonstrable building on the hill was the Great Moravian rotunda from the 9th century, later the castle served to protect the Kingdom of Hungary and the western borderlands. At the end of the 13th century, it came into the possession of Matúš Čák, who controlled large territories and became the legendary "lord of Váh and the Tatras".
